This past Saturday Redeemer Students traveled around the City for fellowship and portions of a four course meal. Adults traveling with us included Matt and Mary Kathryn Austin, Norma Morse, Meli Hotz, Laura and Brian. Traveling in the "boy" car proved to be a bit of a mystery as we sought to answer the question, "who dealt it?" on more than on occasion. Our driver Norma advised they just admit it because she certainly would. As we traveled each car answered questions ranging from what organization you would donate a 1 million dollars to if you had to donate it to what is the first color mentioned in the bible? (green, Genesis 1:30 in reference to plants). First Stop: Diane and Bob Albright (near the plaza).
When we arrived for the appetizer portion of our meal we found a beautiful sign listing off what would be served, however ties would be required. Just as we began to turn away for lack of tie, Bob provided a collection to chose from. I believe these ties were vintage, that is what you call a 25 year old tie right? One was made out of the material a couch would be covered in. I hope to see Bob wearing this come Sunday, might be the best tie I've ever seen.
On the menu was pigs in a blanket, blankets without pigs, 7 Layer Dip (although research showed it to only have 5 layers), tasty toast things, green tea with fresh lemon slices and and a tray of fresh veggies. They asked a fun question that everyone answered, "What is your first memory of church and how old were you?" My favorite answer was Meechie at Redeemer raising his hand during the morning sermon because he didn't understand. They best part was that Pastor Tony (yes that Tony) actually called on him. With three stops left we reluctantly piled into the cars and headed to Olathe. Second Stop: Tony and Shari Felich's home in Olathe.
It was thought that Garmin would be battling Google Maps for who has the best choice of directions from the Albright's to the Feliches, however Mary Kathryn pulled an audible with personal knowledge of in town to out of town travel leading the girl van to arrive at the Feliches first. To our defense however we were still trying to solve the mystery smell as it returned again half way through our travels. Here we stuffed ourselves on dessert eating brownies, cookies, ice cream, whip cream, sprinkles, nuts, chocolate, etc.
My favorite moment on this trip was when Jordan Felich asked Mary Kathryn if she was Joe Nail's grandma. MK handled it well introducing Jordan to Matt, "Joe's Grandpa". I also think this stop was the downfall of Connor who was not able to eat any thing more when we finally reached our last stop. Another notable moment was when Pastor Tony began showing off his new LA Galaxy ball. A few moments later Chris Earnshaw recognized it was his ball. At this point Tony told him he found it in the gym and that it is his ball. This was a joke on Christ because two months ago I was walking down the hall at WCA when Chris opened his locker and a wizards jersey fell out. I recognized it as Tony's and told Chris such. He then explained to me it was not Pastor Tony's because he found it in Lost and Found. I then asked him, "So you lost then?" and he responded, "No, but I found it." I could only laugh at that (and take the jersey). Third Stop: The Mike and Jenny Preston's home in Overland Park.
It was only a short drive to the Preston's home where we enjoyed the side item portion of our meal. We had homemade Mac and Cheese that was so good Molly (the dog) spent most of our time there trying to reach plates on the table that were just out of reach.
The students spend some time on the trampoline outside before we had to head off to our last stop. Fourth and Final Stop: Bob and Sheri Reymond's Home
Our final stop was the main portion of the meal, we had what apparently goes by many different names. Some call them "Dirty Tacos", others "Walking Tacos" regardless of name they were good. You take a bag of Fritos Corn chips, open them up then pour in taco meat, cheese, tomatoes, salsa and lettuce. The end result is a tasty meal that you can take anywhere.
We did just that traveling out to the back porch to take in this bag o' goodness (wow there is another name for these. While Bob was showing some of us how to lay lament floors we entered into Harriet's room only to find she has a huge poster of the Kansas City Wizards. I was so proud. Thank You Thank you to all who participated, by attending, driving or hosting. The night was a wonderful time of fellowship in our covenant community and their homes. I'm already excited about next years version of it.
